Bhaja Govindam & Atmabodha

Two eighth-century texts by Adi Shankaracharya: thirty-one verses on what drives us, and sixty-eight word-paintings of the Self.

Both texts were composed by Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century. Bhaja Govindam names the two human motivations, acquisition and enjoyment. Its thirty-one verses point out the delusion in external pursuit and urge the reader to seek the supreme Self.

Atmabodha is a picture gallery of word-paintings in sixty-eight verses, each with a philosophical theme carried by a simile or metaphor taken from nature and from ordinary life. The practical examples help a seeker keep the awareness of the supreme Reality in every walk of life.
